Miss 4 who has a slight speech impediment: "I can!" *points to the colour chart proudly* "Lellow!" :)

CHRISTMAS GIFT IDEAS FOR CHILDREN TO MAKE

Personalised calendar
Ginger & Cinnomon salt dough gingerbread tree decorations.
The children made calendars and fragrant salt dough tree decorations to give to their parents for Christmas.  

The calendars have been very successful.  I use photos of iconic places where we live that the children are familiar with.  The children get to choose of course.  The children then add a rainbow (super easy for all my 3-4 year olds) or whatever they like using Little Birds Tales.  We use the interactive whiteboard but they have an app too.   I build the calendar on word adding a photo of the child 'painting'.  There are lots of creative possibilities.  Please leave a comment if you would like more details for how to make.

The fragrant salt dough tree decorations smell wonderful.  I started makinging them several years ago and families that I meet say that they can still smell the spices.   Please leave a comment if you would like more details for how to make them.

CONVERSATIONS WITH A 4 YEAR OLD

Discussion during an outdoor supervision with a new child:
4 yo sprout: “Are you a boy or a girl?”
me: “I’m a girl.  How about you?  Are you a boy or a girl?”
4 yo sprout: “I’m a boy!” *eye roll*
*short period of comfortable silence in each others presence*
4 yo sprout: “I think you’ve got balls?”
*short period of uncomfortable silence with a though vomit - WTF!  How do I respond to this?   Maybe he meant he thinks I’m ‘ball-sy’?   He’s 4 he didn’t think that!   It’s important to think about this from a kids perspective.  I should respond factually.  Should I say I have a vagina and not balls?   God no, what am I thinking - I’d be fired for that!   Do I look like a boy!   What is this discussion going to sound like to his parents if relayed back home?   I’m probably go to jail.   Do I really look like a boy! …*
me:  “What makes you think that?”
4 yo sprout: “’Cos I thought I saw some in the shed before and I want to play soccer!”

FATHERS' DAY CARDS

Today my class made our shirt and tie Fathers' Day cards.  
This years design was an improvement on last years.
Then I went into Ms. Pam's room.  Their class had drawn portraits of their Dads'...
...and while mine were cute and fun,

 who wouldn't treasure a portrait of themselves drawn by their 4 year old?

MINIBEAST DISPLAY - BUGS, CATERPILLARS, and PLANTS

This display is a combination of our 'minibeast' and 'plants' topic.  It is so bright and cheery, just perfect for this time of year.
The children loved creating the ladybird.  I found the idea here at Artsonia.

I included some more projects to the side of the display.

PICTURE GRAPHS

 My 4 year olds love making graphs and have become expert at 'reading' and discussing them.  Back at the beginning of the year we created graphs for each of our 5 senses.  The children placed photos of themselves (blurred here for privacy) in the appropriate place on a graph.  Many of the children enjoyed explaining the graph to a parent.

They charted their favourite 'smell' before making (and tasting) a yummy fruit salad.
They discovered that while many of them love the feeling of soft fluff, more of them like a smooth, cool feeling.  No-one liked the bumps.
As we got better at creating graphs we started graphing our friends. Lots of people in our class have brown eyes.
Our favourite activity was for 'taste'.  Bitter dark chocolate was the most popular.

We also listened to different types of music and discovered that we have a class of 'rock & rollers'.

Creating graphs - a great activitiy for maths and language development as well as understanding our 5 senses.

E-BOOK - AUTOBIOGRAPHY



Over the Easter break my daughter made a little e-book in keynote. It is about living life as an expat child in Dubai, United arab Emirates.  I am thinking it would be fun to make a shorter version with each child at school, about what they like doing at school, friends etc.

BEST DIGITAL STORYTELLING, FREE E BOOK


I am a big fan of the blog Free Technology for Teachers by Richard Byrne. Here in Dubai we get very limited opportunities for professional development (particularly in the ICT field) so for me, Richard's blog has been a technology lifeline.   Richard has created a few helpful (free) e-books and recently he asked for submissions on digital storytelling in order to create a new resource on the subject.  As my class had just presented a great assembly that included a digital story, I forwarded my submission.  You will find it in the e-book alongside some fabulous ideas from other educators.  Or go to Free Technology For Teachers and have a look at the other great publications too.
